5th Grade Homework:
Students should be engaging in reading and math practice on a nightly basis. There are numerous links to some great resources for math on this website. Math practice may take a number of student-selected avenues such as advancing their understanding about a particular math topic of interest or challenging their computational skills using self-paced online courses. Khan Academy and TenMarks are favorites. TenMarks: This is our go to personalized learning platform in VBCPS when it comes to thinking like a mathematician. TenMarks is differentiated for your fifth grader. All students will receive updated log in information by the second week of school and should be rocking' and rollin' with consistent usage. Parents are asked to sign their fifth grader's planner each evening. Homeroom teachers will also sign planners each day as we create strong lines of communication. Partnership between home and school for our gifted learners is essential. Brain Break (snack): It is strongly recommended that students bring a sustaining snack or two daily. Please send nutritious food that will fuel the brain. Hydrating the brain is also essential for optimal learning. Bottled water is appropriate and encouraged. Lunches 12:20-12:50: Please celebrate your child's birthday during lunch. If you would like to bring in a treat, please contact out cafeteria. Arrangements have been made to meet all dietary needs. With 1 in 13 students having a life-threatening allergy to nuts, all peanut and tree nut snack items are strictly prohibited and should be consumed only at lunch in the cafeteria. We appreciate your cooperation as we make sure that each and every one of our students is safe in the classroom daily. * If it's adjusted dismissal, lunch will be from 11:40 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Questions about Homework or Academic Tasks: If at any time you encounter a question about an assignment, task, or evening homework, please email your child's homeroom teacher, she will be able to verify and/or clarify. We do minimize homework due to the extended school day and due to the encouragement of extra-curricular activities. Typically homework is the result of purposeful extension of class activities and is absolutely necessary for the academic engagement of fifth grade scholars during the subsequent school day. #nobusywork FIFTH-GRADE RE-ASSESSMENT POLICY
Assessment dates are announced and written in student planners. Objectives, learning activities, and upcoming assessments are also announced each week in the fifth-grade weekly update. Students are expected to self-regulate and ask for help if the standards or material are unclear. Assistance must be requested in a timely manner prior to the announced assessment date. Math: If a student does not perform at grade level (receives a DP or N), the student (not a parent) may request a re-assessment within a week of receiving the grade in the Thursday folder. The student must demonstrate what has been done to master the standard (i.e. corrected assessment, work from practice problems, etc.) prior to taking the re-assessment. Re-assessments will only be offered once for each math standard. Language Arts: Re-assessments in language arts alsorequire a request from the student soon after receiving the grade. Re-assessments need an appropriate task, so it may not be possible to accomplish this within a week of receiving the original grade. Language arts standards spiral through our curriculum all year, so more than one re-assessment is appropriate. Social Studies and Science: These standards do not spiral through our curriculum and may not be re-assessed.. Students receive a list of standards to be assessed in each unit and place this in the process log for reference. Students receive study materials to support these standards in addition to the varied learning activities completed in class. The study materials are found in the process log, and on Schoology. |
