Come out to both and support our school. First event on February 22: SHAMROCK FINAL MILE / OPERATION SMILE BENEFIT DINNER The ODS Operation Smile Club, in conjunction with the Brickell Academy PTA, will be hosting a special dinner in the ODS cafeteria to help raise awareness about the Shamrock Final Mile and to raise money for Operation Smile. A special menu of Specialty Salads with a side of Pasta (Carbs) will be served by ODS students in the cafeteria from 5pm to 6:30pm. Come meet Leprechaun Bob and speak with vendors who will share information about pre-race and post-race nutrition! Vendors in attendance will include: Adventure Watersports, Wareings Gym, Deepak Talreja, Neighborhood Harvest, J and A Racing, and Operation Smile.Tickets to the dinner are $10 and will be sold during lunches from February 4th to the 8th. Tickets to the dinner will not be sold at the door; they need to be pre-purchased. All proceeds will benefit Operation Smile. See the attached menu for dinner options! Second event on February 22: ODS RISING TIDES THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS: FAIRY TALE COURTROOM Immediately after the Shamrock Dinner, head to the ODS Auditorium for a presentation of “Fairy Tale Courtroom” by the Rising Tides Theatre Company at 7pm. This is a school-wide play that will include MS and ES cast members. Tickets are $5 and will be sold either at the door or during school lunches February 4-8. Come support our students! If you are unable to stay for this showing, performances will also be on Saturday, February 23 at 7pm and Sunday, February 24 at 2pm. Logging Student Service Hours The deadline to register and/or log all volunteer hours for the 2018-2019 PVSA (President’s Volunteer Service Awards) is Tuesday, April 30, 2019. We encourage everyone to log into their PVSA account prior to this deadline and check to be certain that the Record of Service Key for ODS (PKA-6778) is entered in your child’s profile. This key is necessary in order for us to certify the hours for your child. On May 1, 2019, students can begin earning hours for the next school year. After April 30, 2019, we will certify the hours in order to prepare the recognitions for our end of the year awards programs. If you have not registered for the PVSA or need to edit your profile and log hours, please visit https://www.presidentialserviceawards.gov/ to do so. We’ve enjoyed a visiting author, storytelling and picture books, book reviews and book tasting. Students may also choose to participate in a used book swap. Book Swap - Friday, January 25 - in cafeteria during lunch Intramurals now open to 5th graders - Wed. & Thurs. after school The ODS MS PE Staff are now happy to welcome 5th Grade students to after school Intramurals! All 5th Grade students that are interested in participating must sign up through the signup genius here and must be sure to bring a transportation note from home that says they will be staying after for Intramurals. It is very important for students to bring the transportation note, otherwise they will be sent home on the bus. On Wednesdays games will played on the Lu Interactive Playground and Thursdays will include full pick-up basketball games. Space is limited to 20 students each day, so it is important to sign up ahead of time. For any questions please contact Ms. Thompson or Mr. Voegel. This shift will take an intermission from 12:20 - 12:50 when volunteers can eat lunch with their child. This fun and exciting grade-wide event will support our study of life in colonial Virginia and will be our winter celebration. Each class will be rotating from one room to another to participate in different colonial activities. All parents are welcome to join us. Additionally, if you can volunteer to help with an activity, or donate supplies, please sign up with this link. No special talents needed! All supplies will be ready and you will be provided with simple instructions. Please plan to remain at the activity for which you volunteered for the duration of the shift you selected. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0C4DAAA72BABFF2-colonial NEW Special Series: Parenting the Twice Exceptional Child - third Thursday each month This series will be offered monthly throughout the school year with the goal of providing parents of twice exceptional children an opportunity to come together and discuss topics relevant to their unique needs. The meetings will be held the third Thursday of each month. The next meeting will be Thursday, December 20, at 2:00 p.m. at Old Donation School. The discussion will center around the text, Differently Wired. Please contact Janet Smallwood if you have any questions. ODS Middle School Academic Program - January 3, 2019 Students in grades 5-7 and their parents are invited to ODS. Open House with tours by student ambassadors begin at 5:00 p.m. ODS Middle School Department Chairs for core subjects and world languages will join teachers of band, chorus, orchestra, visual arts, H/PE, and technology to share their programs as guests tour the building. Also offered during this time will be information on clubs and activities. A presentation will be held in the auditorium at 5:30 p.m. SCA fundraiser - Dave and Buster’s power card sales through Dec. 5
These cards are good at all Dave and Buster's locations and never expire. Cards are available in $10 or $20 amounts- 50% of each sale goes directly to our student council. ODS HOLIDAY TOY DRIVE FOR VB DEPT OF HUMAN SERVICES - through Dec. 11 Old Donation School/Brickell Academy is holding a school wide toy drive until December 11th to benefit the Virginia Beach Department of Human Services Holiday Project. This is a city wide project that helps families in need during the holidays. Collecting age appropriate toys for newborn to 6 years old. Please look for the collection bins near the main entrance of the building. Thank you for your generosity this holiday season. PTA VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES December 13th - Technology Team Support - Partner with our Technology Team to prepare Chromebooks to go home with our 5th Grade students! No experience necessary. December 13th - Send in cookies/bars/treats for our Annual Cookies & Cocoa Event. (Event to be held December 14th). Elementary Walk and Talk - Tuesdays and Thursdays Join us during ES lunch periods on Tuesdays and Thursdays for our Walk and Talks, which allows students to get outside and get some fresh air and movement during lunch! Visit this link to volunteer: 2018-2019 Walk and Talk Sign Up PTA PARENTS NIGHT OUT/ MOVIE NIGHT EVENTS @ ODS - 12/7 AND 12/14 PTA will be hosting Parents Night Out/Movie Nights for ES and MS students this month. Parents Night Out events allow ODS parents to enjoy a nice free afternoon/evening to themselves while students enjoy activities here at school. Elementary Parents' Night Out is December 7th with a showing of Polar Express. The PNO/Middle School Movie Matinee is December 14th with a showing of Elf. Students stay after school (with a note) and pick-up is at 7pm. Cost to attend is $12 per student (popcorn, movie and dinner), and all proceeds to benefit PTA Programs. Tickets only available online through PTBoard: Movie Night Tickets Parents, be on the lookout for information coming home next week related to an exciting field experience opportunity. We will be traveling to Jamestown, Va to "Think Like Historians and Archaeologists." Students will have an opportunity to explore the historic Jamestown settlement and visit the reenactment site.
The cost of the field experience is $24, chaperone interest forms were sent home on Thursday, November 8th. Permission slips will go home on Tuesday, November 13th. All permission slips and payments are due no later than Thursday, November 29th. Please contact your child's teacher if you have questions or need financial assistance. FYI: Permission slips and $24 fee are due by Wednesday, Nov. 21, for our upcoming Jamestown field work. Many parents have inquired about joining us at the historic sites. Please understand that we have booked tours for our groups based on the numbers that the sites and facilities will accommodate. For that reason we must limit parent participation to the allotted five chaperones per class. Parents may not drive to Jamestown and join our group. Lost and Found at Old Donation School is overflowing with items. Please encourage your child to look through items during lunch. ODS will donate all unclaimed items to charity on November 21st.
Movie, 2e, for parents - Wed., November 14 All parents are invited to join us for a showing of the movie, 2e, on November 14, 2018, beginning at 6:00 p.m. Understanding what it means when a gifted child has learning needs that are atypical is important for parents and educators alike. This parent-only event is designed to help parents develop understanding and gain support. See the movie trailer to see if this event is right for you: 2e. Our ODS Scholastic Book Fair is here. We welcome you to join us during the day to shop with or for your students from Oct. 15 to Oct. 19. Please also consider joining us for our Family Night on Oct. 16 from 4 pm-6 pm. This is a great fundraiser for our library, and all proceeds go to adding books and makerspace items for your students.
